Talargoch Lead Mine - No. 2 Shaft

The old lead workings at Talargoch are proper grim in the best possible way. You're looking at No. 2 Shaft - a deep, dark hole in the ground that tells the story of 18th and 19th century mining in this corner of North Wales. It's raw industrial archaeology with none of the polish of a visitor centre, which means you get the real thing: stone walls, the actual shaft opening, and the weight of all that back-breaking work in one bleak spot.

This is for people who actually like mining history and don't mind a bit of atmosphere. Families with young kids might find it underwhelming after ten minutes unless someone's genuinely interested in how Victorians pulled lead from the earth. History buffs will spend longer poking around, reading the landscape, imagining the shift work and the danger.

Finding it takes some effort - it's not signposted like a theme park attraction. Allow 30 to 45 minutes if you're serious about it. Free to visit, which is generous. Go when it's not raining if you can, because the site's exposed and muddy. It's a short drive from Rhyl, so it works well as a half-day excursion if you're staying at Golden Sands or one of the other holiday parks in the area. Doesn't require booking as far as I can tell, but check locally before you go - these old sites can have access restrictions.
