Talargoch Lead Mine - China Rake Adit II

The entrance to China Rake Adit II is easy to miss if you're not paying attention - just a dark mouth opening into the hillside above Rhyl, with a couple of interpretation boards weathered by decades of North Welsh rain. This is Talargoch Lead Mine, one of the area's most productive Victorian operations, and the China Rake Adit is the main horizontal passage you can actually walk into without specialist equipment.

Inside, the air turns noticeably cooler and damper. The passage runs deep into the mountainside, with old timber props still holding up the roof in places and geological veins of lead ore visible in the rock walls if you know what you're looking at. It's genuinely atmospheric - not particularly long, but the sense of being inside something genuinely old and industrial is proper compelling. Bring a torch. The floor can be uneven and there are low sections where you'll need to duck.

This is for people who actually care about industrial archaeology rather than those after a quick photo stop. Kids might get bored unless they're into mines. History types and geology enthusiasts will spend a good hour here, poking around and reading what the boards tell you about Victorian mining practices. It's free and accessible year-round, though winter can get slippery.

If you're staying at Golden Sands or Ty Mawr Holiday Park near Rhyl, it's a worthwhile detour - about twenty minutes' walk from the car park once you've located it. The surrounding countryside is pleasant enough for a longer afternoon out.
