Tair Carn Uchaf

The walk up Tair Carn Uchaf rewards you with proper 360-degree views across the Black Mountain range - the kind that make you understand why people move to South Wales and never leave. It's not a difficult hike by any stretch, which is precisely why families with teenagers and casual walkers tend to do well here rather than serious fell-baggers looking for a slog.

From Ammanford, you're looking at a straightforward scramble to just over 600 metres. The path is clear enough on a decent day, though it can get boggy after rain. Allow yourself a couple of hours return, longer if you want to sit about and take photos or let kids burn off energy at the summit. There's something genuinely satisfying about standing at the top knowing you've not had to battle through heather or scramble over loose rocks to get there.

The real appeal is how quickly you escape the valley floor. Head out from Ammanford and within thirty minutes you're above the clouds on a clear day - genuinely feels like leaving South Wales behind, even though you're hardly any distance from civilisation. On the flip side, it's not so remote that you feel properly remote. That makes it ideal if you're camping at Cosmos Camping or Llandyfan Camping nearby and want a morning walk without travelling far.

Bring layers. The wind up there is no joke, and weather can turn quickly. But if the visibility is decent, this is time well spent.
