Ammanford Park

The woodland paths at Ammanford Park wind through proper South Wales countryside - the kind of place where you'll actually hear birdsong instead of traffic. It's a nature reserve rather than a manicured park, so expect tangled undergrowth, old trees, and the genuine article rather than neat flower beds.

Walkers will get the most from this. The trails aren't strenuous, but they're genuine enough to feel like you've actually been somewhere, and the native woodland gives a real sense of the landscape before everything got paved over. Families with primary-age kids who can manage a mile or so without complaining will find it a decent couple of hours, though there's not much in the way of structured activities - it's all about the walk itself.

The reserve sits just outside Ammanford town, making it an easy add-on if you're camping in the area. Llandyfan Camping is barely three miles away, and River View Touring Park not much further, so you could reasonably pop here for an afternoon between other plans. Being free (as far as we can tell) means there's zero pressure to make it a big event.

Timing-wise, spring brings the woodland flowers, autumn turns everything golden, and winter offers clear sightlines through the bare trees. Avoid after heavy rain when the paths get boggy. It's the sort of place that rewards actually paying attention - bring binoculars if you're into birds, otherwise just slow down and look about.
