Tair Carn Isaf

The walk up Tair Carn Isaf rewards you with proper views across the Black Mountain range - that's assuming the cloud lifts, which in Carmarthenshire it doesn't always do. This is a straightforward hill walk rather than a dramatic scramble, accessible from near Ammanford and popular with locals who know the terrain well.

You're looking at something like an hour and a half up and down, depending on fitness. The peak sits at 645 metres, which isn't high by Welsh standards, but the views on a clear day stretch across to the Brecon Beacons. The approach is moorland and rough ground - decent boots are worth it, and the wind can catch you properly up there.

Families with older kids will manage this fine. Younger ones might find it dull once they've reached the top, and there's not much shelter if weather turns. Solo walkers love it. History types less so - it's nature rather than monuments.

It's free, obviously. The nearest proper base is Ammanford, though if you're camping there are three reasonable spots within a few miles. Llandyfan Camping sits just 2.2 miles away, Gelli Glamping at 2.9 miles, or Cosmos Camping if you want more space. All three would work as a hub for tackling Tair Carn Isaf alongside other Black Mountain walks.

Go when the forecast promises visibility. A misty trudge up moorland to see nothing much at the top is tedious. Clear winter days often deliver better views than summer when haze settles in.
