Tain Links

The links at Tain stretch out along the Dornoch Firth like a golfer's dream, though this is very much a nature reserve first and foremost. Miles of sand dunes, marram grass, and coastal grassland create habitat for all sorts of birds and plants - it's the kind of place where you might spot an osprey or a sea eagle if you're lucky and patient. The walking here is genuinely good. Flat terrain means families won't struggle, and the views across the Firth towards Dornoch are proper lovely, especially in the late afternoon when the light turns golden.

Tain itself is just inland, easy to base yourself there, and the two caravan parks nearby - Dornoch Firth and Dornoch Caravan & Camping - are well positioned if you want to spend a few days exploring the area. Fair warning: it can get windy and the midges in summer are no joke. Bring insect repellent and a windproof jacket.

Walkers and birdwatchers will find more to do here than most. The links reward a slow pace - take binoculars, a field guide, and time. It's not dramatic like some Highland reserves, but that's actually part of its appeal. No crowds, no entrance fees, no faffing about. Just space and wildlife and the kind of quiet you don't get in towns. Worth a good half-day on your itinerary, longer if you're seriously into birds.
