Tails of the Lake

There's a sculpture trail around a lake near Ashford that catches most visitors off guard. Tails of the Lake features wooden animal carvings dotted around the water's edge - some playful, some genuinely impressive. You won't find it mobbed with people, which is half the appeal.

The walk itself is gentle and flat, taking somewhere between 45 minutes to an hour depending on how long you linger at each sculpture. Kids tend to get a kick out of spotting the different animals and hunting for the lesser-known pieces tucked away behind trees. That said, if your lot get restless easily, an hour might be pushing it. For walkers using it as a leg-stretcher between Ashford attractions, it works perfectly - nothing too strenuous, but enough to clear the head.

It's free to access and there's no formal entry point, so you can turn up whenever. Early morning or late afternoon light does the wood carvings proper justice.
