Tadcaster Golf Course

About fifteen minutes south of York, Tadcaster Golf Course sits on proper golfing terrain - the sort of undulating parkland that rewards a decent swing and punishes a careless one. It's an 18-hole course that's been going for over a century, and you can feel the maturity in how it's laid out. The greens are well-maintained, the fairways demand respect, and there's enough water hazard scattered about to keep you honest.

This is one for the golfers, obviously. If you can't tell a birdie from a bogey, you'll be watching from the clubhouse. But for anyone with a handicap and a weekend to kill, it's a solid day out - challenging without being punishing, and the sort of course where you'll walk away thinking about three or four shots you'd like another crack at.

York South Ltd, just a few miles north, makes a decent base for a park holiday if you're combining this with exploring York itself. The course is a proper local fixture, so ring ahead to check current rates and availability - they'll have you sorted on green fees and memberships. Allow a full four to five hours for eighteen holes, longer if you're taking it seriously. The course is walkable if you don't fancy a buggy, though it's hilly enough that most players hire one.

Best visited mid-week when it's quieter and you're not backing up behind groups of eight. Weekends get busy.
