T57 large cairn

You won't find signage or visitor facilities at T57 - it's just a proper Bronze Age cairn sat on moorland between Matlock and Bakewell, and that's precisely what makes it worth seeking out. The pile of stones itself isn't particularly dramatic from a distance, but once you're up close, you realise you're looking at something someone built perhaps four thousand years ago. Archaeologists reckon it's a burial monument, one of many dotted across Derbyshire's high ground.

This is terrain for walkers rather than casual visitors. You'll need decent footwear and the ability to navigate by map or smartphone - there's no beaten path, no café, no interpretation boards. Budget forty minutes each way from the nearest accessible parking, depending on which route you take across the moorland. The real appeal lies in that sense of discovery: you're not turning up to a manicured heritage site, but rather exploring an ancient landscape much as it would have appeared to Iron Age communities.

History enthusiasts and serious walkers will get the most from a visit. Kids might find it underwhelming unless they're already keen on archaeology or enjoy open moorland rambles. It makes a solid addition to a wider Peak District walking holiday based around Matlock - Newhaven Holiday Park sits just five miles away and makes a comfortable base. Lickpenny Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is another option six miles south.

Go early in the day if possible, when light and weather tend to be most cooperative on high ground.
