T43 Ring cairn

Bronze Age stones scatter across a Derbyshire hillside in what archaeologists call a ring cairn - basically an ancient burial site from around 4,000 years ago. The T43 designation sounds clinical, but this prehistoric monument near Matlock tells a proper story if you know what you're looking for.

Walking up to the site, you'll spot the circular arrangement of stones that once formed the outer edge of a burial mound. The middle has long since been cleared or eroded away, leaving this ring of weathered Peak District gritstone. It's not Stonehenge - don't expect crowds or dramatic photo opportunities.

History enthusiasts and serious walkers will get the most from a visit. Kids might find it a bit underwhelming unless they're already into archaeology. The setting is lovely though, with views across the Derwent Valley that make the trek worthwhile even if ancient stones aren't your thing.

Since it's on open moorland, you can visit anytime for free. Allow about an hour including the walk from the nearest parking spot. Weather can change quickly up here, so come prepared.

If you're staying at Darwin Forest or one of the other holiday parks around Matlock, this makes a decent morning detour for families who fancy a bit of prehistoric exploring. Just don't expect the little ones to be fascinated for long.
