T' Auld Lass Gallery

T' Auld Lass Gallery sits just outside York, a converted space where local artists show their work. It's the sort of place that catches you off guard - you're not expecting much, then you find yourself spending longer than planned looking at paintings, prints and sculpture from people who actually know what they're doing.

The gallery works best for anyone who takes their art seriously without needing it served on a silver platter. No pretence, no white-cube nonsense. If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Yorkshire Burrows or Cliff Farm Holidays over in Pickering - it's a decent half-hour detour on a grey afternoon. Families with kids who'd rather be somewhere else might find an hour stretches long.

I'd ring ahead before making the trip. Opening hours aren't published online, and you'll want to check if there's a current exhibition worth your while. Admission details aren't clear either, though galleries of this scale tend to be free or charge a couple of quid. Give yourself forty minutes to an hour if you go.

It works well as part of a York day out - you can spend the morning in the city itself, grab lunch, then pop out here when the crowds get thick on The Shambles. The Westgate Carr Farm and Lakeside parks are far enough away that you'd make a proper journey of it, but from the Pickering site it's genuinely convenient. Worth knowing about, but don't rearrange your plans around it.
