Sinnington Common

The Common sits on the edge of Pickering, a proper working landscape rather than a manicured nature reserve. You get open moorland, woodland patches, and the sort of rambling terrain that rewards a decent pair of boots. On a clear day the views stretch across to the North York Moors - the kind of backdrop that makes you understand why people move to Yorkshire and never leave.

It's less of a destination, more of a place to walk through or set out from. The paths are manageable for most fitness levels, though after rain they can get boggy underfoot. You're looking at 45 minutes to two hours depending on which route you fancy, and honestly it works best as part of a broader day out rather than a standalone trip.

Walkers will get the most from it. History types might find the old field patterns interesting, but there's no visitor centre or interpretation boards. Families with young children might find it a bit open and featureless - there's nothing to catch their eye for long.

If you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby - Cliff Farm Holidays or Yorkshire Burrows are practically on the doorstep - it's an easy morning walk before heading into Pickering proper for lunch. For a wider Moors break, it slots in well alongside visits to places like Helmsley or Rievaulx Abbey. The access is free and there are no formal opening times.

Go when it's dry. Windier days actually improve it - less stuffy than other Moors walks.
