Syning Hill

The walk up Syning Hill takes you out of Coldstream into proper Border country - rolling moorland that feels a world away from the town itself. It's not a long haul, which is what makes it perfect for an afternoon outing when you can't face anything too ambitious.

From the top, you get views across the Tweed Valley that stretch for miles on a clear day. The hill itself sits at around 1,100 feet, so it's manageable without needing fell-walking experience. Most people take between an hour and ninety minutes for the round trip, depending on pace and how many times you stop to look back at where you've come from.

Walkers will appreciate this more than families with young kids - the paths can be boggy in places, and there's proper exposure if the wind's up. It's the kind of walk where you'll understand why the Borders have their reputation. The landscape feels genuine rather than manufactured.

You'll want decent boots and waterproofs as standard. Spring and autumn tend to be best - summer can bring midges, and winter makes the ground treacherous. There's no charge, no visitor facilities up top, so come prepared.
