Swinsty Reservoir

The walk around Swinsty Reservoir is one of those Yorkshire outings that sneaks up on you - dead peaceful, proper moorland views, and barely a soul in sight on weekdays. It's a 4-mile circuit through mixed woodland and open ground north of Harrogate, where the water sits surprisingly serene against the Pennine backdrop.

You get a real sense of the landscape here rather than just standing at a viewpoint. The path is well-trodden and manages that neat trick of feeling wild while staying accessible - even in damp weather it's manageable for most fitness levels. Spring brings birdlife everywhere; autumn turns the deciduous sections lovely shades. The southern shore section offers the best views back across the water, and there's a decent spot near the dam if you fancy a breather and a flask.

It's popular with walkers and the occasional runner, but nowhere near rammed like some of the Lake District hotspots. Families with older kids will get on fine - under-tens might find the full loop a bit much. Allow two to three hours at a relaxed pace.

As part of a park holiday from Windmill Retreats just down the road, this makes an excellent morning walk before heading into Harrogate proper for lunch. It's the kind of place that genuinely feels like you've escaped without actually going anywhere difficult. Free to access, no facilities right there so bring your own water.
