Swildon's Hole Cavern

Advanced cave explorers know this legendary system well, but casual tourists shouldn't even consider it. Swildon's Hole ranks among Britain's most challenging underground adventures - a serious cave that demands proper equipment, experience and ideally a qualified guide. The entrance lies just outside Wells, but don't expect tourist-friendly walkways or lighting.

This isn't Wookey Hole with its gift shop and tearoom. Swildon's involves crawling through tight passages, navigating underground streams and squeezing through gaps that would give anyone with claustrophobia nightmares. The cave extends for miles underground, with different levels requiring increasing levels of skill and nerve.

Families should stick to Somerset's more accessible caves like Cheddar Gorge. This one's strictly for experienced cavers who know what they're doing and have the right gear. Even then, going alone is asking for trouble.

Staying at Wells Touring Park or any of the nearby sites around Wells puts you in proper caving country, with gentler options like Wookey Hole just down the road. But unless you're already into serious caving or fancy joining a proper caving club, Swildon's Hole is one to admire from a safe distance. The Somerset countryside above ground offers plenty of spectacular walks without the underground risks.
