Sunset Hole Upper Entrance

The walk up to Sunset Hole's upper entrance is steeper than you'd think, especially if you've come straight from Carnforth without warming up properly. Once you reach the mouth of the cave, though, there's a real sense of arrival - the opening yawns into the hillside with that distinctive Yorkshire limestone gape, and you're suddenly aware of the temperature drop.

Inside, it's properly dark. Bring a torch - and I mean a decent one, not your phone's flashlight. The cave itself is fairly modest in scale, but there's something satisfying about exploring it without the crowds you'd get at some of the bigger show caves. The geology is the main draw here: you can see the layers of stone, the formations, the way water has worked its way through over millennia.

Historically minded visitors will get more out of it than families with young children, who might find the novelty wears thin after 20 minutes. It's free to visit, as far as I can tell, though the uncertainty around opening hours means you should check locally before making the trip from Carnforth.

If you're staying at Primrose Glamping Pods just down the road, it's worth combining with a walk through the wider caves and limestone landscape of the area. The upper entrance sits nicely within a broader day out exploring Yorkshire's karst terrain, rather than standing alone as a destination. Allow 45 minutes to an hour, depending on how slowly you want to explore and whether you're doing both entrances.
