Sumners Ponds Dog Meadow & Dog Wood

Just outside Horsham, there's a proper little haven for anyone travelling with dogs - Sumners Ponds Dog Meadow and Dog Wood. It's exactly what it sounds like: open grassland and woodland specifically set aside for dogs to run about without the usual restrictions. The meadow gives them space to burn off energy, while the wood provides shade and a bit of adventure if your dog's the type that likes sniffing out new trails.

This works brilliantly if you're staying at Sumners Ponds Fishery & Campsite right next door - practically on your doorstep. But it's also handy to Slinfold Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite a couple of miles away if you're based elsewhere in the area. Dog owners will genuinely appreciate the thought that's gone into this; it beats the usual lead-only walks around town.

Access appears to be free, though opening hours and specific facilities aren't clearly advertised online. Your best bet is ringing ahead or checking when you arrive at the campsite. The place suits families with dogs, obviously, but also anyone who wants their pet to have a proper run-around between days exploring Sussex's wider attractions. In summer it'll be lovely. Winter can get muddy - typical Sussex woodland, really - so wellies are wise.

It's not a destination in itself, but as part of a camping holiday in the area, having a dedicated dog space nearby genuinely makes the stay easier. Well worth knowing about if you're travelling with a four-legged friend.
