Summit Cable Car Station

The cable car that climbs from Llandudno up to the Great Orme's summit is one of those old-school attractions that feels properly Welsh - a bit worn around the edges, unapologetically retro, and all the better for it. You board at the bottom station and rattle upwards in a Victorian carriage that's been doing this since 1902, suspended by cables with views across the bay that get better the higher you climb. The journey takes about six minutes, and when you reach the top, you're standing at over 700 feet with Conwy Castle visible across the water and the curve of Llandudno beach stretching below.

It's not a thrill ride - this is gentle, contemplative stuff. Families with young children tend to love the novelty of it, though toddlers sometimes find the confined space a bit claustrophobic. Anyone with vertigo should probably think twice. The summit station itself is fairly basic - a cafe, some benches, and paths that let you wander around the exposed headland. You can combine it easily with a walk down the Great Orme or back up if you're feeling energetic.

Allow an hour total if you're just doing the cable car and a quick look around. It's free to walk down if you fancy it, though most people take the cable car both ways. Cost-wise it's reasonable for what it is. If you're staying at any of the caravan parks scattered around Aberconwy or Llandudno, this makes a solid half-day out - quick, uncomplicated, and the views genuinely are worth the ride.
