Summit Battery

Concrete gun emplacements and observation posts scatter across this windswept headland, remnants of Britain's coastal defences from the Second World War. Summit Battery sits on high ground overlooking the Bristol Channel, where Allied forces once watched for enemy aircraft and coordinated anti-aircraft fire during the dark days of 1940-45.

The site feels properly atmospheric on a grey day, when the concrete structures emerge from the mist like ghosts from another era. You can still make out the gun positions and command bunkers, though nature has started reclaiming much of the complex. History enthusiasts will appreciate the chance to explore these wartime relics up close.

Families staying at nearby parks like Warren Farm Holiday Centre or Golden Sands Holiday Park will find it makes a decent hour's detour, especially if the kids are into military history. The views across to Wales are rather good on clear days, and it's easily combined with a trip down to Burnham-on-Sea's famous lighthouse.

Access appears to be free, though the site isn't officially maintained so go carefully around the old structures. Best visited as part of a wider exploration of this stretch of Somerset coast rather than a destination in its own right.
