Sullington Hill

The walk up Sullington Hill from Pulborough is straightforward enough, rising just over 200 metres to open views across the South Downs. It's not a slog - more a gentle climb through farmland that takes the better part of an hour if you're not pushing it. The summit itself isn't dramatic, but the sight lines across the valley toward Storrington and beyond make the effort worthwhile on a clear day.

This is walker territory rather than casual stroller land. Families with young kids might find the ascent tedious without the payoff of a proper peak or castle to explore at the top. Older children who enjoy a decent countryside ramble, though, will get something from it - and there's enough space up there to let them burn off energy without worry.

You'll want two to three hours for a proper circuit from Pulborough town, depending on your pace and how long you linger. Go mid-morning to dodge the worst of the crowds, and avoid it straight after heavy rain when the paths bog up. It's free, obviously - no gates or fees involved.

If you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Washington Caravan & Camping Park is closest at two miles - Sullington Hill works as a solid morning walk before heading back for lunch. It connects well with other Downs footpaths if you fancy extending the route. Not a destination in itself, but a proper addition to a walking holiday in the area rather than something you'd drive out of your way for.
