Sturgan Mountain

The walk up Sturgan Mountain rewards you with proper views across the Mourne country and out towards the Irish border - on a clear day you'll see for miles. It's not the highest peak in the range, which actually works in its favour: steep enough to feel like an achievement, but not so brutal that you're gasping for air the entire way up.

This is walker territory, full stop. The paths are well-defined and the climb takes a couple of hours at a steady pace. Families with older kids will manage fine, but younger ones might find it a slog without that vista payoff to pull them along. History buffs won't find much up there besides the views themselves - no ruins, no monuments - so come for the landscape, not the stories.

Newry sits just down the road, which makes Sturgan a natural half-day excursion from anywhere in the Mourne foothills. If you're staying at Hilltop Hideaway - that excellent pod retreat five miles away - you could tackle this in the morning and still be back for a soak in the hot tub by evening. The walk is free, of course. Go when the weather's settled; mist rolls in quick here and kills the views entirely.

Really, it's the kind of outing that sticks with you because of the effort involved. Not Instagram-famous, not crowded, just a solid morning's walk with a payoff that matches the work.
