Carewamean

You'll find Carewamean rising sharply above Newry, a proper fell that rewards the climb with views stretching across Down and into County Armagh. It's not high by Lake District standards - but that's rather the point. The walk up takes the best part of an hour depending on fitness, and the summit's a windswept spot with cairns and bragging rights over the surrounding countryside.

This one appeals most to walkers who know the Mournes already and fancy something less crowded than the main peaks. Families with older kids (say, eight and up) can handle it fine, though younger ones might find the final push to the top a bit relentless. The terrain's rough underfoot in places, particularly after rain, so proper boots matter.

It's free to climb, naturally. Allow a solid three hours for the round trip from your car, more if you're taking it leisurely. Weather here shifts quickly - what starts clear can cloud over fast, so check conditions before you head up.

If you're staying at Hilltop Hideaway, just down the road near Newry, this makes an excellent morning's graft before retreating to that hot tub. It slots neatly into a wider exploration of the Mournes - grab a map and link it with other nearby summits if you fancy. Worth doing once you're in the area, though not a compelling reason to make a special journey on its own.
