Stumbletree Wood

The woodland around Stumbletree feels properly wild in a way that surprises you this close to Ashford. It's not a manicured country estate walk - more a genuine slice of Kentish forest where the paths get muddy and the trees actually do the thinking. You'll find yourself among beech and oak, with enough space to lose the crowds that descend on more famous woodland spots across the county.

Walkers will get the most from this. There's genuine navigation required rather than a marked loop you half-sleep through. The canopy does brilliant things in autumn - proper crunching underfoot, light coming through bronze - and in spring the forest floor comes alive. It's the sort of place where an hour vanishes without you noticing, then suddenly you're wondering if you've gone the right way.

Families with kids old enough to appreciate 'getting a bit lost' will find it worthwhile. Younger children might flag before you've made the most of the woodland. There's no visitor centre or facilities that we're aware of, so bring what you need.

Stay at Broadhembury Caravan & Camping Park just 2.7 miles away and you're perfectly positioned for a few hours here without it feeling like a road trip. Wildside Camping and Glamping, only 5.4 miles off, gives you the same easy access. Both parks let you base yourself somewhere proper and explore the woodland without rushing. Not Instagram-famous, but genuinely good.
