Studley Bottom

Deep woodland walks and ancient trees define this proper Somerset forest, tucked away near Mells. Studley Bottom is the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think - no gift shop, no visitor centre, just dense forestry and paths that meander through some genuinely old growth. The walking is straightforward rather than challenging, which makes it ideal for families who want their kids to burn energy without anyone needing a lie down afterwards.

The forest floor is soft underfoot, and there's enough variation in the terrain to keep things interesting. You'll find good opportunities for spotting woodland birds and if you're lucky, spotting deer. Allow a couple of hours to properly explore without rushing. There's no entrance fee that we're aware of, and car access gets you close enough that you won't need to trek miles just to start walking.

What makes Studley Bottom work is its lack of fuss. It's the sort of place you'd stumble upon by accident and think you'd found something special - which you have, really. It pairs well with a stay at Glamping on the Hill just down the road, or one of the caravan options nearby if you're after something more conventional. The whole area around Mells rewards proper exploration, and this forest is part of why locals know to come back.
