Newbury Hill

Newbury Hill gives you a proper Somerset walk without the drama of Exmoor. It's the sort of spot you'd miss entirely if you weren't staying nearby - a moderate climb that rewards you with views across the rolling countryside towards Mells and beyond. The summit itself is straightforward: a high point with decent vistas on a clear day, nothing dramatic enough to make your legs ache for a week, but enough to justify the outing.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a slog, but it's not a stroll round the park either - budget two hours return if you're taking it at a sensible pace and want to actually look around. The approach is through farmland and woodland, which means you'll see proper Somerset in the making, not just the postcard bits.

If you're basecamp glamping, this works well. From Glamping on the Hill just down the road, or Hidden Wood a bit further out, you can knock this out before breakfast or make it an afternoon thing when you can't face the drive anywhere. It slots neatly alongside a Longleat visit if you're mixing big attractions with quieter walking days - the caravan club site there is handy for families needing proper facilities.

Timing-wise, spring and autumn are cracking for this walk. Summer can get muggy on the climb, and winter makes the paths properly boggy. Start early enough that you're not scrambling back in failing light. Free to walk, naturally - just find a spot to park near Mells and get on with it.
