Stuart House

Stuart House sits in Looe as a proper working arts centre - the kind of place where local artists have studios you can actually peek into, and there's usually something on the walls worth stopping for. It's a converted Victorian building that's seen better days in some corners, but that's rather part of its charm. You'll find exhibition space, artist workshops, and the sort of creative energy that makes a market town worth lingering in.

The main draw is watching artists at work. On a good day you can chat with painters, sculptors, or printmakers about what they're making - no velvet ropes or "please don't touch" signs. It's intimate and unpretentious. Families with teenagers who've got any creative spark will get more from it than younger kids might; there's not really a play area or interactive children's section. Arty types and anyone keen on local creative communities will find it genuinely interesting.

I'd allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're chatty. It's free to wander round, though buying work isn't exactly budget-friendly. Best visited on a weekday when it's less rammed and you've got a better chance of catching artists in their spaces.

Looe itself is heaving with holiday parks - Lydcott Glamping, Waterside at Tregoad, and the Caravan Club site all sit within a few miles. Using one as your base, Stuart House makes a good rainy-afternoon call or a genuine cultural pause between beach days. Not a destination in itself, but absolutely worth an hour when you're in the area.
