Strome Castle (National Trust for Scotland)

The moment you round the bend on the A87 towards Kyle of Lochalsh, Strome Castle appears like something from a half-remembered dream - a ruined fortress jutting out into Loch Carron with the Skye hills rising behind it. This is proper Highland drama, the kind of crumbling stone that makes you understand why people fought over this land for centuries.

What you're looking at are the remains of a 13th-century stronghold that belonged to the MacDonald clan. The castle's in a state now - walls, towers, fragments of what once made military sense - but that's partly what makes it compelling. You can wander around the ruins for free, clamber over fallen stones, and actually feel the place rather than walk through a gift shop.

It's worth stopping for if you're driving between Kyle and Plockton, though don't expect manicured gardens or interpretive panels. The walk down from the road takes ten minutes, and you've got maybe half an hour of genuine exploration before you've seen it all. The light on the water here is something else, especially towards late afternoon.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit of a scramble - proper rubble, no railings. Walkers and history types will get genuinely moody atmosphere without the crowds.
