Strome Castle

Strome Castle sits on a rocky promontory overlooking Loch Carron, and frankly, it's the kind of place that rewards showing up without expectations. The ruins are sparse - we're talking roofless walls and crumbling ramparts rather than a fully intact fortress - but that's precisely why it works. You get genuine Highland atmosphere without the coach parties.

The walk down takes maybe ten minutes from the car park, and it's manageable for most abilities, though the final approach involves some uneven ground. Once you're there, the views across the loch toward the mountains are properly good, especially in afternoon light. The castle itself dates from the 15th century, though there's not much interpretation on site, so you'll want to do your homework beforehand or bring a guidebook.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from this. It's not a place for long-term entertainment - an hour covers it comfortably - but it's ideal if you're touring the Highlands around Kyle of Lochalsh and want something off the main tourist drag. The ruins feel genuinely atmospheric rather than deliberately romantic, which is rather refreshing.

Free admission, open access. If you're based at Reraig Caravan & Camping on Skye, it's barely half an hour away, making it a solid morning or late afternoon stop between bigger attractions. Go when the weather's clear - mist rolling off the loch is atmospheric, but you want those mountain views to justify the walk.
