Strathspey Tours

The Strathspey Railway runs steam trains through some of Scotland's most proper countryside, and honestly, it's the kind of thing you either love or find a bit niche depending on your lot. Based near Grantown-on-Spey in the Highlands, this heritage line hauls vintage carriages along the old route through the Spey Valley - you're looking at maybe 45 minutes to an hour in the saddle, watching the landscape roll past while breathing in that distinctive coal smoke smell.

It's brilliant for railway enthusiasts and families with kids who've got that train obsession thing going on. The routes vary by season, but you'll typically trundle between Aviemore and Broomhill, with proper restoration work happening on the locomotives and rolling stock. The experience itself is genuinely atmospheric - proper metal seats, wooden carriages, the whole kit.

Allow a couple of hours start to finish if you're doing the full visit with the station mooching about. Admission isn't free, but it's reasonable enough for what you get. Summer weekends tend to be rammed, so go midweek if you can. Spring and autumn are lovely for the light, though obviously colder.

It pairs nicely with a caravan park stay at Grantown on Spey Caravan Park just down the road - genuinely well-positioned for exploring the Highlands. Not a full day's entertainment on its own, but a solid hour or two if you're properly into heritage railways or after a bit of nostalgia.
