Strangford Castle

The water is the first thing you notice at Strangford Castle. This squat, five-storey tower sits right on the lough's edge near Downpatrick, and on a decent day the view across to the County Down hills is genuinely arresting. Built in the 16th century, it's the kind of place that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick photo stop.

Inside is compact - you're not talking a sprawling fortress here. The rooms are small, stone stairs are narrow, and the whole thing has that austere medieval feel you either love or find a bit grim. History buffs will appreciate the defensive design; it's a proper working castle, not a romantic ruin. Kids might find it a touch claustrophobic after twenty minutes, though the lough views from the top are worth the climb.

Admission is free, which is decent value for what amounts to an hour's visit, give or take. The real draw is the setting - standing in the courtyard with the water lapping at the fortification walls is genuinely atmospheric, especially if you time it right with the light.

If you're camping at Silverbay Caravan Park just down the road, this makes a logical half-day trip. Pair it with a walk along the lough shore or a drive into Downpatrick proper for lunch. It's not a full-day attraction, but it's the kind of stop that sticks with you - especially if you're into castle architecture or just want somewhere quiet and slightly unusual to spend an afternoon.
