Stow Wood

Walking into Stow Wood feels like stepping into proper Oxfordshire countryside - dense beech and oak woodland that's thick enough to make you forget Oxford's only a few miles away. The forest floor is soft underfoot, carpeted in leaf litter, and on a grey English afternoon it's genuinely atmospheric.

There are decent walking trails threading through, ranging from gentle loops to longer woodland hikes depending on what you fancy. Nothing too demanding, but enough to work up an appetite. In autumn the colours are worth the trip alone - the whole place goes burnished copper and gold. Spring brings bluebells if you time it right, though you'll need to check conditions before heading out.

Historically it's interesting too. This woodland's been here for centuries, and you can feel that weight of time among the older trees. It's the kind of place where you'll see deer if you're lucky and quiet enough.

Families with primary-school age kids will get a solid afternoon out of it - enough paths to explore without getting lost, and the woodland itself is entertaining enough on its own. Older teenagers might find it a bit dull unless they're into nature or photography. Dog walkers absolutely love it here.

Stow Wood works well as a break between the nearby caravan parks - Weston Caravan and Campsite and Greenhill Leisure Park are both within five miles. Pop in for a couple of hours between site activities. It's free to walk, and there's no real time pressure - go for as long as you want. Winter's actually fine here too, less muddy than you'd expect. Proper local woodland that rewards a proper walk.
