Stourport Basin

The basin itself is where the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal meets the River Severn, and it's genuinely worth an afternoon if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Walshes Farm or Lickhill Manor. The whole thing was engineered by James Brindley back in the 1770s - proper feat of engineering for the time - and you can still see the original basin, lock complex, and the Georgian warehouses that line it.

Walking around, there's a real sense of industrial purpose still lingering about. You'll see working narrowboats and leisure craft sharing the water, and the lock keeper's cottage is exactly what you'd imagine it would be. The towpath's excellent for a stroll, particularly in the direction of the river itself where it opens up and feels less cramped.

It's free to wander around, which is exactly how it should be. You won't need more than an hour or so unless you're the type to sit with a coffee and watch the boats come through - and honestly, that's not a bad way to spend time here. The lock gates are operational most days, so there's something genuinely happening, not just a museum piece.

Families with older kids will get more from it than toddlers, and canal enthusiasts will find themselves properly engaged. It's the sort of place that feels bigger in person than it sounds on paper - the Victorian infrastructure still has weight to it. Summer's the obvious choice, when the basin's busiest and you've got a fighting chance of seeing boats passing through.
