Stori Brymbo: Fossil Forest

You're standing in what used to be a coal mine, staring at 320-million-year-old fossils embedded in the rock. Stori Brymbo is a working archaeological site in Flintshire that's opened up a Carboniferous forest - the kind of place where you can actually touch ancient tree stumps and see the layers of prehistoric life. It's proper surreal.

The site tells the story of an ancient tropical forest that got buried and turned into coal. Walking around the excavation areas, you get a real sense of what the landscape looked like before humans were even a thought. There are interpretive panels and staff about to explain what you're looking at, which helps when you're squinting at a 300-million-year-old lycopod.

History buffs will spend a good couple of hours here, genuinely. Families with older kids who aren't bored by rocks will find it interesting enough - younger ones might flag after 45 minutes unless they're proper geology enthusiasts. It's not a theme park experience, but it's authentic and unusual, which counts for something.
