Stori Brymbo

The old ironworks at Brymbo tells a proper industrial story - one of those places where you can actually feel the weight of what happened there. Stori Brymbo sits in Flintshire, just outside Chester, and it's essentially a museum built around the ruins of a Victorian ironworks that once employed hundreds. You walk around the site seeing blast furnaces, worker housing, and the landscape that industry carved out, with interpretation boards filling in the gaps.

It's genuinely good for anyone with an interest in industrial heritage or local history. Kids aren't usually bored - there's enough space to roam and enough visual oddness (massive stone structures, chimneys) to hold their attention for a solid hour or two. Adults tend to spend longer, especially if they read the full story.

The whole experience is free, which is worth knowing. The site's outdoors mostly, so weather matters - go on a clear day and you get some decent views across the valley. Allow two hours minimum if you're reading the boards properly.

Since both Willow Farm Glamping and Honeypot Hideaways are only about four and a half miles away, Stori Brymbo works well as a half-day activity if you're based at either site. It pairs nicely with walking in the surrounding countryside - the area has proper footpaths, and Brymbo itself isn't far from other bits of industrial archaeology if you're keen on that sort of thing. Best visited midweek when it's quieter.
