Stony Moor

The forest at Stony Moor unfolds across open moorland just outside Pickering, offering something quite different from the usual woodland walk. It's a working landscape where you can actually see the bones of the terrain - rough heather, scattered trees, and views that stretch properly far. You're walking through moorland that genuinely feels wild, not tamed into pretty submission.

This is proper country for people who like their forests a bit rough around the edges. Walkers will find decent trails threading through here, and it's the sort of place where you notice what the landscape is actually doing rather than just following a manicured path. The moorland habitat means birdwatchers occasionally get excited, and the openness means kids don't feel boxed in by trees on all sides.

Allow a couple of hours for a decent explore, depending on the trails on the day. There's no visitor centre nonsense as far as I can tell - you just turn up and walk. The nearest caravan parks - Lakeside, Yorkshire Burrows, and Cliff Farm Holidays are all within five miles of Pickering - make reasonable bases if you're looking to spend a few days exploring the area. Stony Moor pairs well with walks around the surrounding countryside; it's more of a proper rambler's destination than a 'morning attraction' spot. Go when the weather's decent because exposed moorland in the rain isn't quite as rewarding.
