Stony Haw

The walk up to Stony Haw starts properly steep, climbing through moorland just outside Hawes until the landscape opens out and you're standing on a modest limestone peak with views across Wensleydale that stretch for miles on a clear day. It's not a mountain - more a chunky fell - but the effort required to get there means most casual visitors skip it, which is precisely why it's worth doing.

From the summit you can see across to Pen-y-ghent and the broader Pennine ridge. On days when the weather cooperates, it's genuinely lovely. On days when it doesn't - and this is Yorkshire, so that's frequent - the mist rolls in thick and the whole thing feels rather more dramatic than the modest height suggests.

Walkers will get the most from this. The climb takes about an hour from Hawes town itself, though that depends on fitness and how many times you stop to catch your breath. It's perfectly manageable for fit families with older kids, though younger ones might find it tedious without proper motivation. Allow two to three hours round trip including a sit-down at the top.

Staying at Hawes Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite puts you barely half a mile from the trailhead, which makes this a natural early-morning or late-afternoon outing during a park holiday in the area. Combine it with walks around Hawes itself - the market town's worth an hour of wandering - and you've got a solid day sorted.
