Stonelands Waste Tor

The walk up Stonelands Waste Tor rewards you with proper views across Dartmoor once you've made the effort. It's not the tallest peak around Newton Abbot, but the rock formations at the summit give it character - weathered granite that's been shaped by centuries of moorland wind and rain.

You're looking at maybe forty minutes from the car park if you take your time, and it's steep enough that you'll feel it in your legs but not so brutal that families with older kids will struggle. The actual tor itself sits exposed and wind-swept, which means the views are unobstructed but you'll want a proper jacket even on days that feel mild at sea level.

Historically significant in terms of Bronze Age settlement - there's evidence of ancient activity up here - but it's the landscape that dominates rather than any visitor facilities. There's nothing at the top, no café, no interpretive signs. Just you, the rocks, and the moor rolling away in all directions.

If you're based at Oakmoor Touring Park, it's a straightforward drive over and makes for a solid half-day outing. Go early if the weather's clear - the afternoon often brings clouds that rob you of those distant views toward Exmoor. It's worth doing, but don't expect crowds or creature comforts. This is raw Dartmoor.
