Stone Pit Hill

Stone Pit Hill rises abruptly from the Pennine landscape just outside Barnoldswick, offering views that stretch across Lancashire's moorland when the weather plays ball. It's a proper fell walk rather than a casual stroll - steep in places, with rough ground underfoot, but nothing that demands technical skill. The summit rewards you with sweeping vistas across the moorland and down into the valleys below. On a clear day you can see for miles.

Walkers will find this their sort of place. It's challenging enough to feel like a proper achievement without the full commitment of a day-long expedition. Families with kids aged ten-plus who've done a bit of fell work before will manage it fine, though younger children might struggle with the gradient. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip, depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top.

There's no café, no facilities - you're out on the moor here. Start early if you want the light on your side, and check the forecast. Storm clouds roll in quick across the Pennines.

Stone Pit Hill sits at the tougher end of local walks - it's not a destination on its own, but it's brilliant as part of a walking holiday.
