Stoke Wood

The woodland around Stoke Wood, just outside Bicester, is proper grown-up forest - the sort of place where you actually feel like you've left the Oxfordshire suburbs behind. Ancient oak and beech trees create a canopy that makes everything quieter, greener, somehow more real than the manicured parks you usually find in this part of the world.

It's managed by the Woodland Trust, which means the paths are reasonably well maintained without feeling overdone. You're looking at a straightforward walk through genuine woodland rather than an attraction with visitor facilities or interpretation boards. Bring a map or download the route beforehand - there's no visitor centre and signage is minimal. The whole visit takes between one and two hours depending on which loop you fancy, and it's the kind of place that rewards a slow pace. Listen for woodpeckers. Watch for deer if you're lucky.

This works brilliantly if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Glebe Leisure or Barton Hill Farm are only a couple of miles away - as a morning walk before you head elsewhere. It's not a destination in itself unless you're genuinely into woodland ecology or just need space and quiet. Families with young children might find it a bit samey after half an hour; teenagers will probably moan. But if you want to actually experience English woodland rather than just visit a nature spot, Stoke Wood delivers.
