Stoke Pero Church

The walk to Stoke Pero Church is half the appeal, truth be told. Perched high on the Quantock Hills above Minehead, this little stone church sits quietly in the moorland, and you'll need decent legs to reach it. The building itself is 12th century, modest and grey, with enough character to make the climb worthwhile rather than feel like a wasted effort.

Inside, it's simple: stone walls, a few wooden pews, and the kind of peaceful silence you actually notice. No crowds, no gift shop, no performance. Just a small church doing what small churches do. The real draw is the setting. On a clear day, views across the Exmoor plateau are genuinely excellent, and you can see why someone chose to build here centuries ago.

Historically minded visitors will appreciate the Norman origins and the isolation that's kept it largely unchanged. Families with younger children might find the steep approach exhausting rather than fun - allow a good hour for the walk from the nearest parking. Walkers tackling the Quantock Hills paths will find it a proper waypoint and a good reason to stop.

It's free to visit, though the footpath approach varies depending on where you start. If you're staying at Minehead Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just down the way, it's a manageable morning or afternoon outing on foot. Don't expect facilities. Bring water.
