Stoke Park Gardens

The moment you step into Stoke Park Gardens, you realise why people bother making the trip out to Surrey for a proper nature fix. It's a working nature reserve that actually feels like a reserve - no theme park atmosphere, no gift shop nonsense. Just woodland paths, open meadows, and the sort of quiet that reminds you why you left the city in the first place.

Walkers will get the most from this one. The network of trails winds through mixed woodland and grassland, taking anything from 45 minutes to a couple of hours depending on which way you fancy going. Spring and early summer are cracking for wildflowers and bird spotting. Autumn's decent too if you're not bothered about rain. Bring binoculars and a decent coat - the weather moves in quickly round these parts.

If you're camping at Chantry Wood (just down the road), this makes an excellent half-day venture. Families with kids who can manage muddy paths without complaining won't find it boring, though there's not much in the way of structured activities - it's more about letting them run about and spot things. Edgeley and Firesyde are within easy driving distance if you want to base yourself elsewhere and make a day of it.

Free to visit, which is always welcome. Pop in whenever - it's a reserve so there's no set hours to worry about. Proper Surrey countryside without the stately home price tag.
