Stoke Heath Park

The heathland at Stoke Heath spreads across proper open ground just outside Coventry, where you'll find gorse, heather and birch trees in a landscape that feels genuinely wild for the West Midlands. It's a working nature reserve, not a manicured park - paths wind through scrubby patches and the undergrowth is left to do its thing, which means you're more likely to spot birds, insects and small mammals than you would in somewhere tidier.

Walkers get the most from this place. The terrain is flat and easy to navigate, with several circular routes through the reserve that take between 30 minutes and an hour depending on how much poking about you do. Bring binoculars if you're into birdwatching - the mix of habitats here attracts everything from linnets to nightjars, particularly in late spring and summer. Families with younger children might find it a bit samey after a while since there aren't attractions or facilities on site, but if your kids are the type who like spotting wildlife and don't mind a rough path, they'll do fine.

The reserve operates year-round and entry appears to be free, though it's worth checking ahead for any seasonal closures or organised events. It works well as a morning stop if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Hollyfast is closest at just under 4 miles away - since you won't want to spend an entire day here unless you're seriously into natural history. The real draw is that it's genuinely undisturbed habitat, not a visitor attraction trying too hard.
