Stoke Clump

The walk up Stoke Clump rewards you with proper views across the South Downs - nothing dramatic, but genuinely lovely on a clear day. It's a modest peak rather than a mountain, the sort of place where you can be at the top in under an hour from Chichester, which sits just a few miles to the south.

You get decent countryside on the way up, rolling fields and proper woodland sections that make the walk feel properly earned even if the ascent isn't steep. The summit itself is open ground with sight lines that stretch well across Hampshire and into West Sussex. It's the kind of spot where serious walkers might combine it with other downs walks in the area, rather than make a special trip on its own.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit of a slog without a reward grand enough to justify the effort - the views won't impress if you're used to Alpine scenery. But teenagers who enjoy rambling will get something from it, and it's genuinely pleasant if you're based at one of the nearby parks like Chichester Lakeside or Concierge Camping and just want a decent half-day outing.

No facilities at the summit itself, so bring water. Best tackled on a dry day when the ground underfoot isn't boggy. The walk takes around ninety minutes return from the car park, making it sensible for a morning slot before exploring Chichester's centre or heading to other South Downs walking routes.
