Stockmoor & Wilstock Country Park

The Somerset Levels around Bridgwater have a particular magic when you venture into Stockmoor & Wilstock Country Park. It's one of those reserves where the flatness works in your favour - you can actually see across the landscape rather than feeling hemmed in by trees.

What you're looking at is a proper working wetland, the kind of place where birdwatchers genuinely lose track of time. Lapwings, redshanks, snipe if you're lucky. The paths are manageable, nothing taxing, so it suits families who want to move at a gentle pace without the kids complaining their legs hurt after twenty minutes. You can spend a couple of hours here quite easily, moving between different vantage points, or duck in for a quick half-hour walk if you're passing through from Bridgwater.

Admission is free, which is fair - you're not paying for manicured gardens or fancy facilities, just access to genuine wildlife habitat. Best visited in spring when migrants start arriving, or winter when the reserve fills with visiting ducks and geese. Summer's quieter, admittedly, and autumn gets a bit damp underfoot.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Secret Valley, Mill Farm, or Thornhills are all within striking distance - this makes a solid addition to a Somerset holiday. Pair it with a trip into Bridgwater itself if you need shops and restaurants, but the park's the real draw. Don't expect drama or grand vistas. Expect patience, binocs, and the sound of water birds. That's rather the point.
