Stobs Castle (Site of)

All that's left of Stobs Castle now is a grassy mound and a few stone fragments scattered across farmland just outside Hawick. It's not dramatic - not the sort of ruins that make you gasp - but there's something quite compelling about standing where a proper medieval fortress once dominated the Borders landscape.

This was a serious defensive stronghold, built to protect against English raids during the endless skirmishing between Scotland and its southern neighbour. The site sits on high ground with decent views across the surrounding countryside, and you can still make out the shape of the fortifications if you know what you're looking for. The walk to reach it is straightforward enough, though you'll be crossing private farmland so it's worth checking locally before heading out.

Historically minded visitors will find it rewarding - it's the sort of place where you can actually feel the weight of 500 years of border conflict. But I'll be honest: if you're after something photogenic or structurally impressive, you might feel a bit let down. Kids under ten will probably lose interest after ten minutes.
