About Stobs Camp W1
This was one of Scotland's biggest POW camps during WWI, holding German and Austrian prisoners of war. Walking the site, you get a real sense of the scale of the place. The layout is still visible if you know what you're looking for: the parade grounds, the outline of the huts, the defensive ditches. It's the kind of place that rewards a bit of curiosity and historical knowledge - casual visitors might find it a touch underwhelming unless they're genuinely interested in military history.
Allow a couple of hours to explore properly, longer if you're the type to photograph everything and read every historical marker. It's free to visit and entirely open access, which is brilliant. The moorland setting is lovely even when the camp itself feels a bit bare. Spring or autumn are probably best - summer can be boggy, winter genuinely grim.
If you're staying at Stouslie Snugs nearby, it makes for a worthwhile morning out before heading back to the glamping. Not a draw on its own, but if you're in the Hawick area for a few days and interested in that particular slice of history, it's worth the drive out.
