Stob nan Cabar

The walk up Stob nan Cabar from Kinlochleven is a proper Scottish hill experience - steep, rewarding, and over in a few hours if you're moderately fit. The peak itself sits at 1,027 metres, which sounds impressive until you realize it's the sort of mountain that catches the mist just when you've hauled yourself halfway up. Most people tackle this as a day walk, leaving from the village and following the path that climbs through moorland and rough terrain. The views back down to Loch Leven are genuinely excellent on a clear day, and you'll spot the Mamores range rolling away in the distance.

It's walker territory, frankly. Families with young children will struggle - the ascent is relentless and there's nothing to stop for at the top except a cairn and the chance to catch your breath. That said, confident hill walkers will find it satisfying rather than punishing. Allow three to four hours return, depending on fitness and whether you stop to admire the view halfway. There's no charge, obviously - it's a Scottish hill.

Both let you knock off this walk first thing, then enjoy the rest of the day without rushing. Spring through autumn are your best windows - winter can be grim up there.
