Stob na Broige

The walk up Stob na Broige from Kinlochleven is a proper hill, not a gentle stroll. You're looking at a 947-metre peak that commands the landscape around Glen Coe, and the effort pays for itself a hundred times over once you're up there.

It's a straightforward ascent rather than a technical climb - the kind of walk where your legs do the work but your head stays relatively clear. Most people allow three to four hours for the round trip, depending on fitness. The views from the summit sprawl across the Mamores and down into the glen itself. On a clear day, you can pick out Ben Nevis lurking in the distance. On a murky one, well, you're in cloud and the whole thing feels a bit atmospheric in that Scottish way.

This is a walk for anyone who actually enjoys hillwalking. Kids old enough to manage sustained climbs without whinging will be fine. Casual strollers looking for an Instagram moment should probably head elsewhere. It's free, naturally - no gates, no charges, just lace your boots and go.

If you're based at Red Squirrel Campsite or Blackwater Hostel just down the road, this makes a brilliant day out. Kinlochleven itself is small but functional - you can grab supplies before heading up. The walk connects well with other routes around the area if you want to string together a longer adventure. Start early though. Scottish weather moves fast, and being caught in cloud at height when you didn't plan for it takes the shine off the whole thing.
