Stob Mhic Mhartuin

The climb to Stob Mhic Mhartuin takes you right through the heart of the Highlands, rising above Kinlochleven with views that stretch across the grey bulk of Ben Nevis and far beyond. It's not a casual stroll - this is proper hill walking terrain, steep in places and unforgiving if you're not equipped with decent boots and a map. Most people reckon on three to four hours for a round trip, depending on fitness and how long you linger at the top.

What you get for the effort is genuinely worth it. The peak itself sits at a satisfying height without requiring scrambling or specialist kit, making it manageable for experienced hill walkers rather than rock climbers. The surrounding landscape feels genuinely remote - all high moorland and rocky outcrops, with the West Highland Way carving through the glens below. On a clear day the vistas are tremendous; cloud cover rolls in quickly though, so timing matters.

If you're basing yourself near Kinlochleven during a park holiday, this works as a proper full-day adventure. Red Squirrel Campsite, five miles out, would be the better call for facilities and reviews. Blackwater Hostel is closer but more basic. The walk itself is free, naturally - just turn up with the right gear and weather sense. This isn't the sort of peak you rush; it rewards patience and respect.
