Stob Garbh

The walk up Stob Garbh isn't a casual stroll, and that's rather the point. This chunky peak sits above Arrochar in the Lowlands, and it's the sort of climb that sorts the weekend warriors from the pub-and-chips brigade. You're looking at a proper graft - steep in places, loose scree if you catch it after rain, and views that genuinely justify the huffing and puffing.

What you get at the top is an unobstructed panorama across the Arrochar Alps. Ben Vorlich sits across from you, Loch Long sprawls below, and on a clear day you can trace the landscape for miles. The mountain itself is bare and exposed - no trees to shelter behind, which means the weather can turn on you fast. Bring waterproofs even if the forecast says sunny.

This is walkers' territory, full stop. Families with young kids will struggle; you're looking at three to four hours there and back for anyone with reasonable fitness. Solo hikers love it because it's solitary without being lonely, and the technical difficulty keeps the crowds manageable. History buffs won't find much narrative here - it's pure mountain mechanics.

Free to walk, naturally. Allow a solid half-day minimum. If you're camped at Beinglas just down the road, you can roll out in the morning and be back by afternoon tea. The peak pairs well with the lower hills around the Arrochar area if you're planning a proper hill-walking break.
